Nadal has withdrawn from this year’s French Open and plans to retire after the 2024 season

Date:2021-09-01

“Over the past four months, I have been working as hard as possible every day. Those days were extremely tough because I still couldn’t find a solution to the problems I encountered at the Australian Open,” Nadal said. “Right now, I don’t feel I have reached the level required to compete at the French Open. I tried my best, but I can’t go. I don’t like the situation I’m in now.”
The 36-year-old Spanish tennis star injured his left leg during the Australian Open in January this year. At the time, Nadal and his team expected a six-to-eight-week recovery period, but he has not returned to the court since then.
Nadal also stated that 2024 “could” be the final year of his professional tennis career. He is pausing now to fully enjoy his time on the court in 2024. However, there may be changes: “I’m not 100% sure because you never know what will happen. My idea and motivation are to try to enjoy and bid farewell next year to the tournaments that have been crucial to my tennis career.”
